Blunders That Will Make You Want to Kill the Movie Theater
Going to the movies can be a great experience, whether you're rewatching a classic or seeing a modern blockbuster for the first time. Yet, there are times when your actions in the theater can lead to feelings of embarrassment or even make you wish for a more dire consequence than just being asked out of the theater. In this article, we'll explore some of the most memorable blunders that made moviegoers as well as theater staff want to take matters into their own hands.
Blunders with Consequences: From Loud Outbursts to Embarrassing Moments
Back in 2003 when I was 15, I decided to see The Lone Ranger with friends. As the opening scene of the ranger riding his white horse played, I couldn't resist shouting, “Hi Ho, Silver! Away!” I thought my friends would share the excitement, but my friends just laughed, while the rest of the theater looked at me with intense gazes. A staff member then escorted me and my friends out of the theater. I admit, it was a rather poor decision, but it is an example of how a simple quip can turn into a major inconvenience.
The Titanic 3D Mishap
A few years later, in 2012, I decided to see the 3D rerelease of Titanic. I anticipated watching the additional scenes, but instead, I was rather disappointed. During the scene where Leonardo DiCaprio hits the propeller, I laughed out loud—albeit at a time when everyone else was solemnly watching the sinking of the ship. I later realized that I was the only person laughing at that moment. Everyone in the theater, including the staff, glared at me. The SWAT team even showed up! “Hold it right there!” They must have thought I was a deranged fan or simply too loud in a place that demands silence and respect. This moment served as a reminder that even though movies can be historically significant, they aren't a laughing matter.
The Jurassic Park Projection Mishap
As a projectionist, I was once tasked with operating the projector for the opening night of Jurassic Park at a suburban theater in the early 1990s. The theater was packed, with even a line out the door. Just as the main evening show was about to start, there was a sudden flicker from the xenon arc bulb in the projector. To everyone's horror (and mine), the bulb burst, which is extremely dangerous and could have led to fatalities. A 6.5kW xenon arc bulb is pressurized to about five times the pressure in a typical car tire, and if it explodes while being handled, it can be lethal. We had to wait for the projections to cool down and then remove the bulb safely, a process that took about half an hour. The theatergoers had to sit through it, many of whom had consumed beverages or even come dressed as dinosaurs. The tension in the theater was palpable as people turned their attention to me for a solution. This experience taught me the importance of professionalism and calm in crisis situations.
