As a Black Person, My Preference for Refreshing Drinks Over Sugary Ones
I've always been someone who prefers natural, refreshing drinks over sugary ones. This stance has its roots in my personal experiences and health considerations, especially as a person of color. Today, I want to share a bit more about why I've gravitated towards these types of beverages over the past couple of decades.
The Evolution of My Beverage Preferences
Growing up, I recall specific brands that were quite prevalent but not to my taste. Take Sunny D, for example, and still today, I don’t have a fondness for it. Its thick drink quality and artificial flavorings just didn't sit well with me. Similarly, Tampico juice and Hawaiian Punch were also on my list of less preferred options. The sweet and syrupy nature of these drinks was never a favorite.
However, for a time, I would have preferred the 'purple stuff' implying drinks traditionally marketed towards children. What I meant by the 'purple stuff' were the tangy, often more natural-tasting drinks like Gatorade's powder mixes or comparable brands. The ability to personalize them by adding my own sugar suited my palate greatly.
Current Beverage Choices
It’s been about 15 years since I indulged in those types of sugary drinks. Nowadays, the closest I get is True Lemon or Lime and Vital Proteins Hydration Collagen. These brands offer what I look for in a refreshing drink, with the added benefits of natural ingredients and better health profiles.
I have gravitated towards drinks that are not only refreshing but also healthy. For instance, when it comes to true lemon and lime fountain drinks, they provide a tangy, revitalizing taste that makes for a great alternative to sugary sodas. On the other hand, Vital Proteins Hydration Collagen is a more recent discovery that not only tastes good but also adds to my hydration without the sugar spike.
My Health Considerations and Habits
My preference for these refreshing drinks isn’t just about taste, but also about health. Sunny D, for instance, is an orange-flavored citrus punch, but it is notoriously high in sugar, making it an unhealthy choice. Similarly, I’ve developed the habit of diluting most of my beverages, including soda, with water. This not only cuts down on sugar but also allows me to enjoy my favorite drinks more safely.
I’m a firm believer in staying hydrated, but not at the expense of excess sugar. That's why I prefer to dilute my drinks or add extra ice. Additionally, I take a personal approach to smoothies, preferring them to be more refreshing and less heavy. I often mix seltzer with fresh fruit and juice to create a light, hydrating beverage that doesn’t leave me feeling heavy or sugared out.
Overall, my journey from sugary drinks to refreshing, healthier options has been a rewarding one. It's about finding that perfect balance between taste and health. And as a black person, sharing these preferences and habits with others can help foster a broader appreciation for the importance of choosing refreshing, healthy beverages.
