After a Long Break: Should You Pick Up the Guitar Again?
Many guitarists have taken a break from playing, only to reconsider picking up their instrument after a considerable amount of time. This question is particularly poignant for those who have been away from the guitar for over fifteen years. Would it be pointless to try playing again? Let's explore why it might not be.
Why You Might Consider Picking It Up
Returning to your guitar after a prolonged absence is definitely not pointless! Here are several compelling reasons to consider picking up the instrument once more.
Muscle Memory
After twenty years of dedicated practice, you likely have some muscle memory that can help you return to playing more quickly. This memory can make it easier to regain your skills and confidence, saving you a significant amount of time that a complete novice would need to regain proficiency.
Experience and Understanding
Your extensive experience means you already understand fundamental aspects of music, from chord structures to music theory and techniques. This foundational knowledge can make the learning curve much easier, allowing you to build upon your past achievements.
Enjoyment and Relaxation
Playing an instrument can be a great source of joy and relaxation. If you enjoyed playing in the past, you might find that the joy and satisfaction you experienced are still present, and could even return with renewed vigor.
New Skills and Perspectives
Approaching the guitar with a fresh perspective, you can explore new styles, genres, or techniques that you might not have focused on before. This can breathe new life into your playing and enrich your appreciation of music in different ways.
Building a Community
Reconnecting with music can also lead to new friendships or communities. Whether online or in-person, sharing your journey with others can provide support and camaraderie, making the process even more rewarding.
Consider starting with short practice sessions to see how it feels. Gradually increase your practice time as you become more comfortable. Enjoy the process!
Another perspective on this journey comes from personal experience. Over 15 years ago, I had a falling out with my old band, losing a sense of community and camaraderie. Our drummer, once integral, left and later returned with a different attitude, eventually causing the dissolution of the band in 2013. With this band, I had poured my soul and dedicated 16 years to the guitar before them. Since then, I have been through a period of depression and drug use, seeking recovery in 2016. Recently, I have been thinking about bringing the guitar back into my life. I still hum out riffs and can't quite forget the music we created. I hope that you, like me, will choose to pick up the guitar again and rediscover the joy it brings.
Starting over or improving on old skills is never pointless. The journey is valuable, and the joy waiting for you is worth the effort. Embrace the process and let music bring you back to life.
