AIs Role in Literature: Do Younger Generations Prefer AI Writers?

Do Younger Generations Prefer AI Writers?

Younger people often express a desire to claim the mantle of novelists while relying on artificial intelligence (AI) to do the writing. However, is this a genuine aspiration or mere fantasy?

My Perspective

I am 34, so while I might be considered younger by some definitions, I believe that in the grand scheme of things, age is not the primary factor in determining one's perspectives on AI and its impact on creative fields.

The Dilemma of AI and Its Impact

When considering the broader question of AI replacing human labor, a conundrum emerges. On one hand, AI has the potential to massively increase productivity and solve numerous long-term issues. On the other hand, the implementation of AI in our current economic and political systems will lead to significant job losses in the short term.

The Role of Capitalism

The problem is not AI itself, but rather how capitalism is structured. Without effective social safety nets, the existential dread caused by job loss becomes more pronounced. However, current institutions and leaders, driven by capitalist principles, often cannot openly acknowledge the dire consequences of AI implementation. Instead, they offer vague promises of job creation or the purported benefits of Universal Basic Income (UBI).

Moreover, UBI is not a panacea. AI, once it reaches the level of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), will be capable of performing any job. Furthermore, UBI will transfer ultimate control to those who dominate the AI and robotics industries, as these companies will effectively control the labor force, media, legal systems, and means of production. This concentration of power could be permanent, leading to a situation where money flows only through them and back to the people through UBI.

Implications for Writers

Novelists will continue to write books, but their roles will shift. They won't be able to compete with the speed, quality, and convenience that AI can offer. AI could provide a more efficient and comprehensive creative experience, making traditional human writers less relevant in a current sense.

Belief and Skepticism

The belief in AI replacing human labor spans all age groups, including younger people. It is true that some individuals in any group will believe anything or nothing. Yet, this shouldn't discourage those who still hold onto the idea that AI can replace human creativity, whether in writing or other fields.

The future is uncertain, and it is crucial to consider both the potential benefits and the challenges that AI presents. As technology continues to evolve, it is important for society to grapple with these issues and seek solutions that protect the well-being of its members.
