A Virtual Tour of My Home Recording Studio: From Simple to Complex

Whether you're a seasoned musician or just starting out, setting up a home recording studio can be a daunting task. My journey began with a simple setup and has evolved over time. Let's take a virtual tour through the evolution of my studio and some tips along the way!

Early Beginnings: The Simple Studio

My initial setup was quite straightforward. I had two Personal Computers (PCs) each running Axaxis Acid Music 11. I used a Focusrite Scarlett audio interface with one microphone and one instrument input. I recorded guitar tracks with my own JVM Marshall stack mic’d for my vocal tracks, and drum machine on my computers, all within the comfort of my bedroom. All the recordings were in MP3 quality.

Challenges and Changes

Because my setup was so small, it often felt like I was in a fishbowl. However, my personal situation required changes. To make room for my children, I had to transform my space. Initially, I had to move to a smaller room, which compromised my recording space. But then, I had to introduce a gaming room for my children. This change made me relocate again, forcing me to downsize even more.

A New Setting, New Setup

The current setup is slightly more advanced. The furniture is a 27-inch iMac with Logic Pro X and an extensive collection of plugins. I use a Focusrite Saffire Pro 14 audio interface, with a variety of microphones, with my current favorite being the Audix AT2020. For bass, I have Yamaha, Cort, and Dean basses, along with a Sansamp Bass Driver DI. For effects, I have a range of pedals including a Mooer Filter, Octave, and Distortion Pedals. These are some of the essentials that any music enthusiast worth their salt should have in their toolkit.

Upgraded and In Progress

It's important to keep your equipment updated and your skills sharp. Right now, my studio is going through a bit of a transition. I'm in the process of upgrading to a new computer and audio interface, which will significantly enhance my setup. I'm currently finishing a long overseas trip and will take the time to set everything up properly. Until then, I'm just managing with my old equipment.
