A Symphony of Game Soundtracks: From Visual Novels to Action Packed Epics
Video game soundtracks, a genre in themselves, are a highlight for many gamers. As someone who enjoys listening to these soundtracks outside of the gameplay, I’ve compiled a list of some of my favorites. These soundtracks not only enhance the gaming experience but are also enjoyable to listen to on their own.
Visual Novel Soundtracks
My journey into video game soundtracks began with visual novel soundtracks. These have a unique charm that is captivating, even outside of the games. Some of my all-time favorites include:
Steins;Gate: A multifaceted visual novel with a soundtrack that complements its narrative intricacies. Tsukihime ~A Piece of Blue Glass Moon~: Known for its haunting atmosphere and emotionally charged melodies. Little Busters!: A heartwarming and romantic series with a soundtrack that embodies its warmth. CLANNAD: A classic visual novel with a soundtrack that tells its own story. These soundtracks are driven by intricate compositions that demand attention, often using leitmotifs to enhance storytelling. The melodies and harmonies are both evocative and captivating, making them a joy to listen to.
Action-Packed and Cinematic Soundtracks
Beyond visual novels, there are numerous video game soundtracks that stand out for their cinematic and action-packed qualities. Here are a few that I hold in high regard:
The Undertale and Deltarune Soundtracks by Toby Fox
Toby Fox is a genius on multiple levels. Not only is he a superb storyteller and game developer, but his music is impressively exceptional. The use of leitmotifs in Undertale enhances its storytelling, making tracks like “Hopes and Dreams,” “His Theme,” “Here We Are,” “Death By Glamour,” and the title track stand out. Similarly, Deltarune has made a significant mark, with “A CYBER’S WORLD” being a standout and “My Castle Town” and “BIG SHOT” gaining popularity.
The Hollow Knight Soundtrack by Christopher Larkin
Hollow Knight‘s soundtrack is gorgeous and extremely atmospheric. Listening to it brings a sense of wonder and discovery. Tracks like “Greenpath,” “Crystal Peak,” “White Palace,” and both of Grimm’s boss themes are some of my favorites. The orchestral music in this game makes any experience, especially rainy days, feel more beautiful.
The Hades Soundtrack by Darren Korb
Hades‘s soundtrack is a fantastic blend of traditional Greek guitar music, energetic synth, and metal. The use of these elements to create a engaging and immersive experience is truly impressive. My personal favorites are “Out of Tartarus” and “The Exalted.” The quieter tracks and vocal tracks, like “From Olympus” and Patroclus’ theme, also stand out.
Classic Game Soundtracks
Classics like Final Fantasy XIV and various Castlevania soundtracks continue to captivate audiences with their iconic melodies, such as “Bloody Tears,” “Vampire Killer,” or “Dance of Pales.” Particularly noteworthy is the Symphony of the Night soundtrack by Michiru Yamane, which, due to its stylistic diversity, holds the top spot. “Crystal Teardrops” is a standout track, while “Wandering Ghosts” is a unique addition. Another beloved soundtrack is the Lament of Innocence, which offers a more uniform yet darkly atmospheric vibe.
The Skyrim Soundtrack by Jeremy Soule
Skyrim‘s soundtrack is not only a standout but also highly nostalgic. The music enhances the fantasy-adventure feel and creates a magical atmosphere while exploring the outdoors. While I’ve only been playing the game for about two years, the soundtrack has already created a sense of familiarity that makes the game feel even more immersive.
The Blasphemous Soundtrack by Carlos Viola
Blasphemous‘s soundtrack is a melancholic take on Spanish guitar, fitting perfectly with the game’s inspired Spanish Inquisition atmosphere. While some boss themes can be grating when heard out of context, tracks like “Prohibidos y Cubiertos de Polvo,” the library theme, offer a dark yet enchanting listening experience.
Listening to video game soundtracks is about more than just enhancing the gameplay. It’s about experiencing a different world, a new story, and a purely musical journey. These soundtracks not only stand on their own but also enhance our understanding of the games they accompany.
