During my visit to Kyushu, I found myself frequently indulging in the region's wide array of traditional and innovative dishes. One of my absolute favorites is Hakata Ramen, renowned for its delicious tonkotsu broth and chewy noodles. Another must-try is Tonkatsu, a breaded and deep-fried pork cutlet that is both flavorful and satisfying.
Freshness in Fukuoka
Fukuoka, a bustling city on Kyushu, is known for its abundant and fresh seafood. Whether it's sashimi or squid sashimi, the fish is always at its freshest. For a unique dining experience, try mizutaki, a slow-simmered chicken hot pot that can be enjoyed with a side of fish. During the winter, the Itoshima Peninsula offers a wonderful setting for fresh seafood feasts at oyster shacks, where you can grill your own seafood over charcoal for a budget-friendly, delicious meal.
Outdoor Food Stalls and Bar Ebi-chan
Once a favorite amongst locals, outdoor food stalls known as yatai were a go-to spot for traditional Japanese street food. However, my recent visits to these stalls have not been as fulfilling as I had hoped. I found that the quality has diminished, and unlike before, there may not be as many dedicated tempura stalls. On the contrary, visiting a sit-down restaurant would be a more consistent and luxurious dining experience.
However, there is one exception to my assessment. Yatai Bar Ebi-chan, a full bar housed in a yatai, stands out as a unique and exceptional establishment. This bar is not only the perfect place to enjoy a drink but also an authentic Japanese cocktail experience. The ambiance is reminiscent of a traditional Japanese bar, but the cocktails, whiskeys, and bar snacks are of the highest quality.
